The National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) is pleased to announce the naming of Dr. Carrie Hritz as the Center’s new Director of Research. In this role, Dr. Hritz is responsible for leading the Center’s research programs and communications. She also works with leadership to develop calls for proposals, identify partnership and collaboration opportunities, and support research teams throughout the project cycle. Dr. Hritz was previously SESYNC’s Associate Director of Research.

Prior to joining SESYNC in 2017, Dr. Hritz was Branch Chief of Partnership Communication and Outreach in the Geography Division at the U.S. Census Bureau (2015-2017) and an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellow in the Geosciences Directorate at the National Science Foundation (NSF) (2014–2015). From 2008–2014, she was a faculty member at Penn State University, where she ran the Geospatial technologies lab in the Anthropology Department.

As a trained landscape archaeologist, Dr. Hritz holds expertise in using Geospatial Tools to look at the patterns of human-environment interactions during the period of the first urban cities, with a particular focus on the Middle East. From 1999–2013, she led archaeological fieldwork in Syria, Turkey, and Iraq, participating in one of the first projects to work in the southern Iraqi marshes since the late 1960s.

Dr. Hritz holds a B.A. in Anthropology from New York University, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in Near Eastern Archaeology.
