Redefining Our Relationship to Nature

Abstract
Alternative Environmental Metaphors and Socio-Environmental Synthesis

Our approach to conservation—and to nature—is shaped in part by our metaphors. In this presentation, Dr. Brendon Larson examines alternative ways of conceptualizing invasive species (e.g., “invasional meltdown” versus “novel ecosystems”) and evaluates their implications for socio-environmental synthesis and, more broadly, for our relationship with nature.

His research concerns the challenge of conserving ‘nature’ at present, given the extent to which it is interwoven with humans: we have modified habitats globally, we are changing the climate and the soils, and we are moving species around the planet, among many other effects. These changes are so dramatic that geologists now refer to this epoch as the Anthropocene (‘the era of humans’).

To address this challenging interdisciplinary problem, Brendon balances his background as an ecologist and naturalist, which allows him to understand first-hand what we’re losing with his current social scientific research, which allows him to take a critical perspective on scientific knowledge and provides some awareness of the range of perspectives of contemporary change.
