Seminar: The Global Water Grab Syndrome

Abstract

At SESYNC, Jampel conducts research on the institutional drivers and governance conditions of virtual freshwater appropriation associated with global land grabbing and water grabbing. Prior to joining SESYNC, Jampel was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at The Vincent and Elinor Ostrom Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis at Indiana University. At the Ostrom Workshop, he coordinated the social science team on the Kenyan site of an inter-university, interdisciplinary research project on water governance and adaptation to climate change in rural Kenya and United States. He received his dual PhD in December 2013 in Environmental Science and Technology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and in International Cooperation and Sustainable Development from Sapienza University of Rome. He holds a MS in Environment and Development from the London School of Economics and in Energy and Environmental Management from Sapienza University of Rome. Jampel earned his BS in environmental economics from The University of Siena in Tuscany. Jampel has a passion for video making and, when possible, complements his research in the field with documentary production.

Jampel Dell'Angelo

Postdoctoral Fellow; Visiting Scholar in Residence

Dr. Jampel Dell’Angelo is Associate Professor of Water Governance and Politics in the Department of Environmental Policy Analysis at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM), of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Jampel is also Editor-in-Chief of the journal World Development and the Principal Investigator and Coordinator of the European Union's Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) NEWAVE 'Next Water Governance' project. He is an environmental social scientist and a critical development scholar interested in the political economy of natural resources, particularly water. The NEWAVE consortium, which Jampel leads, includes 10 host organizations and 19 partners from academia and the public and private sectors. It organizes the research and training of 15 early-stage researchers enrolled in different PhD programs. Jampel’s research looks at the multilevel dimensions of cooperation and conflict over freshwater resources. The focus of his research spans from socio-environmental dynamics of climate change adaption in community irrigation schemes of rural Kenya to global patterns of virtual water appropriation associated with transnational land investments. He employs mixed methods and builds on theoretical pluralism combining perspectives from the Bloomington School of Political Economy and the Barcelona School of Political Ecology. He has published extensively in high-impact journals. Jampel is a Visiting Scholar and member of the Ecohydrology Lab in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at University of California, Berkeley; an Environmental Governance Affiliate Scholar at SESYNC; and an Affiliate Scholar of The Ostrom Workshop at Indiana University.
