Café Scientifique

The National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) organizes the Annapolis Café Scientifique—a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology.

Café Scientifique meets the last Thursday of every month (except November and December) at 6:30 p.m. at:

49 West Coffeehouse, Wine Bar and Gallery
49 West Street
Annapolis, Maryland

Reservations are strongly suggested and sometimes required depending on attendance. Please call (410) 626-9796 to guarantee your seat or, just as importantly, to cancel your reservation so someone on the waitlist may attend.

There is never a cover charge for Café Scientifique. Come early at 5:30 or 6 p.m. to order food and/or drinks!

The first Cafés Scientifique were held in Leeds, United Kingdom in 1998. From there, cafés gradually spread across the country. Currently, some seventy-plus cafés meet regularly to hear scientists or writers on science talk about their work and discuss it with diverse audiences. Meetings take place in cafés, bars, restaurants, and even theatres, but always outside a traditional academic context.
